Special appeal: You have to take your hat off to Oscar! print email

A special appeal from Greyhound Compassion!

Oscar spent most of his life in Northern Ireland where he was the subject of abuse. His wounds were so severe that the local television featured him on one of their programmes. We arranged to take Oscar and his friend Rosie and so, once details were finalised, they began the long trip from Belfast down to Devon.

Although he was still covered in scars, he and Rosie settled in the kennels and we hoped that, in time they would both find new loving homes. Rosie was lucky and found a home, and Oscar missed his friend and we discovered that he would live quite happily with another bitch and so, whenever we had a new one in, we put her in with him to keep him company.

Eventually, some people came to the kennels and saw Oscar and wanted to give him a home. They had another greyhound bitch and had lost her friend so she was lonely. It seemed an ideal home and Oscar went off to his new home. However, things did not go well. We found out the hard way that Oscar did not like male dogs and men in hats. When some relatives of the people who had homed Oscar came to visit, they brought their dog and a fight broke out. Luckily, no serious damage was done but sadly the people decided that Oscar had to go back to the kennels.

Oscar has now been with us for over a year. He has suffered dreadfully from his cruel treatment but, apart from his dislike of male dogs and men in hats, does not appear to have any other problems. He looks beautiful now – he is black and his coat shines like satin. Oscar has seen so many other greyhounds come and go and always waits patiently when people visit in the hope that, one day, the right person will come along.

The right person is out there somewhere. Oscar has a lot of love to give and all someone would need to be careful of would be other male dogs and to ensure that anyone wearing a hat, takes it off before meeting him.

Oscar is in the care of Greyhound Compassion whilst waiting for his new home. If you would like to support the work of Greyhound Compassion, please click below to donate directly to the charity using your credit/debit card.
